Background

Occludin, a 65-kDa tetraspan integral membrane protein, plays a role in the formation and regulation of the tight junction paracellular permeability barrier. The C-terminal is cytoplasmic and is important for interaction with ZO-1, which links the protein complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Occludin is localized at tight junctions of both epithelial and endothelial cells. (1) It is highly expressed in the testis, kidney, lung, liver and brain. Expression of occludin is required for the infection of liver cells by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). (2)
